The Age of Worms
Marquis of the River
Mysterious figure first mentioned by Spitgob, who claimed that the Marquis had stolen “his pretty”. The party believes this referred to the crystal seal of Icosiol, which is said to be the key to opening Icosiol’s final resting place. Furthermore, they believe the “River” in the Marquis’ title refers to the River of Blood, first mentioned by the Vaati voices when they chastised Riddle for not staying on task. The party saw what they believe to be the River of Blood, separating a door from Icosiol’s tomb and a gatehouse with clockwork imagery (see Marut Inevitable), with a stone bridge falling apart over the River.
Archie found tracks in Icosiol’s tomb leading to a shrine where there were two niches – one held a statue of a Wind Lord, and the other was empty. The tracks stopped there. He suspects they belong to this mysterious Marquis.
The Marquis is known to be a “true ghoul,” with all the abilities of a normal ghoul but with a vast intelligence and civilization. True ghouls occupy the White Kingdom, a realm far beneath the earth, and when they die they become spectres, either advising the White Kingdom or seeking revenge upon the one that killed it.
