The Age of Worms
Decades ago, the lizardfolk of the large swampland south of Diamond Lake, known as the Mistmarsh, grew bolder in their attacks on nearby farms and trade routes, threatening not only the smaller towns in the region but the interests of powerful people in the city of Greyhawk. The onslaught prompted the construction of two great keeps, one at the south end of the marsh (Marsh Keep) and the other at the north ( Blackwall Keep). Fully garrisoned with Greyhawk militia and a spellcasting officer, these keeps coordinated a massive invasion of the swamps that amounted to, essentially, a near genocide of the lizardfolk. Satisfied that the threat was ended, the militia returned to their keeps and have kept watch over the edges of the swampland ever since. Things were quiet for many years until CY 593 (two years prior to the beginning of the campaign), when sudden uprisings of lizardfolk began anew. These attacks were desperate and savage, disorganized, almost wild with fury, but were quelled by the keeps. There was talk of sending diplomatic envoys to treat with the savage humanoids, but no word came to the Diamond Lake populace on whether or not that happened. Very recently, there has been word (including firsthand reports from Jane and Long Fist) that a new uprising may have begun – this one characterized by the organization of lizardfolk warriors fighting in platoons employing military–type tactics. A force of Mistmarsh lizardfolk destroyed the Bronzewood Lodge druid covenant, though not without suffering great losses.
